Detects alcohol concentration in breath/air with high sensitivity. Features dual Analogue/Digital output and adjustable threshold for DIY breathalysers and safety systems.
Have you ever wondered how law enforcement devices detect alcohol levels so quickly, or wanted to build a safety lock for your machinery? The MQ-3 Alcohol Gas Sensor Module is your gateway to building high-sensitivity breath analysis tools right on your workbench. Whether you are designing a "Smart Driver" safety system or just a fun party gadget, this industrial-standard sensor makes detecting ethanol concentrations simple and reliable.
The Probots Quality Advantage Gas sensors are sensitive components. Generic market sensors often arrive with crushed mesh caps or poor pre-heating characteristics. This unit is Probots™ Lab Verified, meaning we check the heater coil resistance to ensure it falls within the correct 150mA power consumption range before it reaches you. We also utilise Probots™ Secure-Transit packaging to ensure the delicate wire mesh—critical for airflow and sensor protection—arrives perfectly shaped and dent-free.
Specifications
Target Gas: Alcohol (Ethanol)
Operating Voltage: 5V DC ±0.1
Current Consumption: ~150mA (Heater ON)
Detection Range: 0.05 mg/L – 10 mg/L (Alcohol)
Output Format:
Analogue (A0): Voltage varies based on gas concentration (Higher concentration = Higher Voltage).
Digital (D0): Logic High/Low based on an adjustable threshold.
Pre-heat Requirement: 20 minutes (for testing), 24 hours (for precision calibration).
Dimensions: 32mm x 20mm x 22mm
Compatibility & Platform Support It is critical to match the sensor's voltage to your microcontroller to avoid damage.
Arduino (Uno/Nano/Mega): Directly Compatible. The 5V logic matches perfectly.
ESP32 / ESP8266: ⚠️ Caution. These are 3.3V boards. You MUST use a voltage divider or Logic Level Converter on the A0/D0 pins to step down the 5V signal to 3.3V.
Raspberry Pi: ⚠️ Requires ADC. The Raspberry Pi does not have Analog pins. To read the A0 signal, you need an external Analogue-to-Digital Converter (like MCP3008) or use only the Digital (D0) pin for simple "Threshold Reached" logic.
Key Applications & Projects
DIY Breathalyser: Build a portable device that displays blood alcohol content (BAC) estimates on an LCD.
Ignition Interlock Prototypes: Create a safety demonstration where a motor (simulating a car) won't start if alcohol is detected.
Industrial Leak Detection: Monitor solvent storage areas for ethanol vapour leaks.
Fermentation Monitor: Track alcohol production levels in brewing setups.
Project Evolution
Prerequisites: You should be comfortable reading Analogue inputs (analogRead) and using Serial Plotter on Arduino.
The Upgrade: If you have mastered simple temperature sensing, the MQ-3 introduces you to Chemical Sensing and Heater-based components. This unlocks the ability to build "Bio-Feedback" devices that react to human physiology.
Effort Level: Intermediate. The wiring is simple, but converting raw voltage to accurate PPM/BAC requires patience and calibration.
Virtual Technician: Wiring & Safety ⚠️
VCC: Connect to 5V (Do NOT use 3.3V; the heater will not reach operating temp).
GND: Connect to Ground.
D0 (Digital Out): Connect to any Digital Pin (for simple limit detection).
A0 (Analogue Out): Connect to Analogue Pin (A0-A5).
Critical Warning: The sensor contains an internal heater. It is NORMAL for the sensor to feel warm to the touch (approx 40°C).
Accessories
Included in the Package: 1 x MQ-3 Alcohol Gas Sensor Module
Required Accessories (Not Included):
Microcontroller: Arduino Uno or Nano (Recommended for easiest setup).
Wires: Female-to-Male Jumper Wires.
Power: 5V Power Supply (if not powering via USB).
Optional: Logic Level Converter (for ESP32/Pi users).
