2-in-1 Gas Sensor for Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Flammable Gases (Methane/LPG). Dual sensitivity based on heater voltage. Ideal for comprehensive home safety alarms.
Why buy two sensors when one can do the job? In a real-world safety scenario, you often need to watch out for multiple threats: exhaust fumes (CO) from the garage and gas leaks (Methane/LPG) from the kitchen. The MQ-9 Gas Sensor Module is a hybrid powerhouse designed to detect Carbon Monoxide and Combustible Gases simultaneously. By cycling its internal heater temperature, this sensor acts like an MQ-7 and MQ-4 combined, making it the most efficient choice for comprehensive "Smart Home" air quality monitors.
The Probots Quality Advantage Multi-gas sensors are complex. If the internal ceramic tube isn't coated evenly, the sensor will fail to distinguish between gases. We rely on Probots™ Lab Verified testing to ensure the heater coil resistance is chemically stable (~31Ω). This guarantees that whether you are running it at 1.5V for CO detection or 5V for Methane, the sensor performs linearly. Delivered in Probots™ Secure-Transit packaging, the sensitive anti-explosion mesh arrives ready for high-precision calibration.
Specifications
Target Gases: Carbon Monoxide (CO) AND Methane/LPG.
Detection Range:
CO: 10ppm – 1000ppm.
Methane/LPG: 100ppm – 10000ppm.
Operating Voltage:
Circuit: 5V DC.
Heater: 5V (High Temp - Methane/LPG) / 1.5V (Low Temp - CO).
Output Format:
Analogue (A0): Voltage increases with gas concentration.
Digital (D0): Logic High/Low trigger based on adjustable threshold.
Dimensions: 32mm x 20mm x 22mm.
Compatibility & Platform Support
Arduino (Uno/Nano/Mega): Directly Compatible. The 5V logic matches perfectly.
ESP32 / ESP8266: ⚠️ Caution Required. The Analog output can reach up to 4V. You MUST use a voltage divider (e.g., 10kΩ & 20kΩ resistors) to drop the signal below 3.3V to avoid damaging the ESP32 ADC.
Raspberry Pi: ⚠️ Requires ADC. The Pi cannot read analogue voltages. Use an external ADC chip (MCP3008) or the Digital (D0) pin for a simple alarm.
Key Applications & Projects
Universal Kitchen Alarm: One sensor to detect a gas stove leak (LPG) AND smoke/CO from burnt food.
Garage Safety System: Monitor car exhaust (CO) and potential fuel leaks (Hydrocarbons) in a closed garage.
Industrial Safety Robot: A mobile sniffer robot that patrols factory floors for multiple hazards.
Fire Early Warning: Detects the CO released during the smouldering phase of a fire before flames appear.
Project Evolution
The "Hybrid" Secret: Most hobbyists run this at a constant 5V. However, for true dual-detection, you should cycle the heater voltage (60s at 5V, 90s at 1.4V).
The Upgrade: Use a PWM-controlled Transistor or Relay to switch the heater voltage. This allows you to read CO during the low-voltage cycle and Methane during the high-voltage cycle.
Effort Level: Advanced. Requires circuit modification and precise timing logic in your code.
Virtual Technician: Wiring & Safety ⚠️
VCC: Connect to 5V (Stable source required).
GND: Connect to Common Ground.
D0: Connect to Digital Pin (for alarm trigger).
A0: Connect to Analogue Pin (for PPM measurement).
Heater Warning: The sensor will get warm (~40°C). This is normal.
Voltage Note: If powering purely at 5V (without cycling), the sensor is primarily sensitive to LPG/Methane and less accurate for CO.
Accessories
Included in the Package: 1 x MQ-9 Combo Gas Sensor Module
Required Accessories (Not Included):
Controller: Arduino Uno or ESP32.
Power: 5V 1A Adapter (Crucial for stable heater performance).
Wires: Female-to-Male Jumper Wires.
Alert: 5V Buzzer.
