The 30-Tooth Speed Advantage Most desktop 3D printers ship with 16-tooth or 20-tooth pulleys on their motors. By upgrading to a 30-Tooth pulley, you alter the mechanical ratio of your machine. A GT2 belt has a tooth pitch of 2mm. Using the formula Distance = Teeth x Pitch, a standard 20T pulley moves the belt 40mm per revolution. This 30T pulley moves it 30 x 2 = 60mm per revolution. This yields a massive 50% increase in top travel speed for your axis, making it highly desirable for lightweight machines like laser engravers that need to travel fast without requiring immense pushing torque.
Precision 5mm Bore & Secure Locking The internal bore of this pulley is machined to exactly 5mm in diameter. This is the universal standard for the D-shafts found on NEMA 17 stepper motors used in almost all desktop robotics. To ensure the pulley never slips during rapid acceleration, the top hub features two threaded holes containing tiny M3 set screws (grub screws). What does "GT2" mean? "GT2" stands for "Gates Tooth 2mm." It describes the rounded profile of the teeth and the exact 2mm distance (pitch) between the center of each tooth.
What size motor shaft does this fit? The internal bore is 5mm, which perfectly fits the standard 5mm shafts of NEMA 17 and some NEMA 14 stepper motors.
How many teeth does this pulley have? It has exactly 30 teeth.
What width of timing belt should I use? The toothed area is 6.5mm tall, designed specifically to hold standard 6mm wide GT2 timing belts.
How do I attach it to the motor shaft? Slide it onto the shaft, align one of the two set screws with the flat spot on your motor's "D-shaft", and tighten both screws down using an Allen key.
What size Allen key do I need? The M3 set screws typically require a 1.5mm hex/Allen wrench.
What is the outer diameter of the pulley? The widest part (the outer retaining flanges) measures 22mm in diameter.
How tall is the entire pulley? From the bottom flange to the top of the hub, it is 17.5mm tall.
What is the difference between a 20T and a 30T pulley? A 30T pulley is physically larger in diameter. Because it has more teeth, one full rotation of the motor will move the belt further (60mm vs 40mm).
Will a 30T pulley give my 3D printer more torque? No, it does the exact opposite. A larger pulley acts as a "higher gear." You gain top speed, but you lose mechanical pushing torque (resolution).
Will the belt slide off the top or bottom? No, the pulley features two flared outer flanges specifically designed to keep the 6mm belt tracked perfectly in the center.
Is this an idler pulley? No. Idler pulleys contain internal ball bearings and spin freely. This is a "Drive" pulley designed to mechanically lock to a rotating shaft.
Do I need to change my firmware settings if I upgrade to this? Yes. If you swap a 20T pulley for a 30T pulley on a 3D printer or CNC, you must recalculate and update your "Steps per mm" in your firmware, otherwise your machine will move the wrong distances.
Can I use this with a T2.5 belt? No. T2.5 belts have a square tooth profile and a 2.5mm pitch. They will not mesh with this GT2 pulley.
Why does my pulley wobble when the motor spins? Wobbling usually occurs if the motor shaft is bent, or if you overtightened one set screw on a perfectly round shaft without a flat spot, pushing the pulley off-center.
Can I drill the 5mm hole out to an 8mm hole? It is highly discouraged. Unless you use a metal lathe, a hand drill will not be perfectly concentric, and the pulley will wobble aggressively. Buy an 8mm bore pulley instead.
What material is this made of? It is precision-machined from a lightweight, durable aluminum alloy.
Can I use this on a completely round shaft (no flat spot)? Yes, but the set screws may eventually slip under heavy loads. It is highly recommended to file a small flat spot onto your motor shaft for the set screw to bite into.
How far will the belt move if my motor turns 1 full rotation (360 degrees)? Because the pitch is 2mm and there are 30 teeth, one full rotation moves the belt exactly 60mm.
Can I use 30T pulleys on my CoreXY printer? You can, but because CoreXY requires high torque and extreme precision for moving the heavy gantry, 16T or 20T pulleys are generally preferred over 30T.
