Precision motion starts with a rigid frame. The SK8 Vertical Shaft Support is the standard solution for securing 8mm Smooth Rods in CNC machines, 3D printers, and automation slides. Unlike basic printed parts that can flex or crack, this solid aluminum bracket anchors your linear rails firmly to your machine's base, eliminating vibration and rail alignment issues.
Probots™ Grip-Lock Design : The SK8 features a dedicated Hex Clamping Bolt on the top. Once your rod is inserted, tightening this bolt compresses the aluminum collar around the shaft, ensuring zero play and preventing the rod from spinning or sliding out during operation.
Probots™ Surface-Ready : Machined with a flat base and standard mounting holes, these supports bolt directly onto V-Slot aluminum extrusions (like 2020/2040 profiles) or custom base plates, ensuring your axes remain perfectly parallel.
Shaft Compatibility: 8mm Diameter (Smooth Rod)
Material: Aluminum Alloy (Silver Anodized)
Mounting Type: Vertical (Standing)
Clamping Mechanism: M4 Socket Head Cap Screw (Included)
Base Mounting Holes: 2 x 5.5mm (Fits M5 Screws)
Dimensions: 42mm (H) x 14mm (W) x 32.8mm (L) - Check datasheet for precise hole spacing.
Weight: ~24g
CNC Routers: Secure the X and Y axis rails to the frame.
3D Printers: Commonly used to hold the Z-axis smooth rods on Prusa-style or custom core-XY printers.
Camera Sliders: Create a stable track for camera dollies.
Linear Actuators: Support the guide rails for DIY piston mechanisms.
Don't Overtighten: The body is aluminum. While strong, the threads can strip if you use excessive force on the clamping bolt. Snug is enough.
Alignment Trick: Mount your SK8 supports loosely first. Slide the rod through both supports and the linear bearing block. Move the bearing back and forth to center the rails naturally, then fully tighten the SK8 base screws. This prevents binding.
Hardware: The base holes are typically 5.5mm or 6mm. You will need M5 Bolts and T-Nuts (if using aluminum extrusion) to mount these.
Required (Sold Separately):
8mm Smooth Rods (Chrome Plated)
M5 Mounting Screws & Nuts
Compatible With:
SC8UU Linear Bearings (slide on the rail supported by this unit)

What diameter rod fits this support?
It is designed specifically for 8mm smooth rods (linear shafts).
Does it come with the mounting screws for the base?
No, it includes the black top clamping bolt only. You must buy M5 screws separately to mount it to your frame.
Can I use this for threaded rods (Lead Screws)?
Technically yes, if the outer diameter is exactly 8mm (like T8 screws), but it is primarily designed for smooth guide rails.
Is this better than a 3D printed part?
Yes. Aluminum is significantly stiffer, handles heat better, and won't crack under clamping pressure like PLA/PETG.
How many supports do I need for one rail?
You typically need 2 supports per rail (one at each end). For a full axis with two rails, you would need 4 units.
What is the distance between the two base mounting holes?
The center-to-center distance is 32mm.
Can I mount this on 2020 Aluminum Extrusion?
Yes, perfectly. You will need M5 screws and M5 T-Nuts to secure it to the slot.
What is the difference between SK8 and SHF8?
SK8 mounts the rod Vertically (standing up). SHF8 mounts the rod Horizontally (lying flat).
Will the clamping screw scratch my rod?
Minimal risk. The clamping force compresses the aluminum collar around the rod rather than driving a screw tip directly into it.
What Allen key do I need for the clamp?
Usually a 2.5mm or 3mm Hex Key.
Is the finish rough or smooth?
It has a fine sandblasted texture with a silver anodized coating, which resists corrosion and looks professional.
Can I drill the hole out to 10mm?
No. The walls of the SK8 are too thin to be drilled out safely. You should buy an SK10 support for 10mm rods.
Is it made of steel or aluminum?
It is made of Die-Cast Aluminum Alloy. It is lightweight yet strong.
Does it dampen vibration?
Being metal, it is a rigid mount. If you need vibration dampening, you should mount the SK8 onto a rubber gasket.
Can I use this outdoors?
Yes, the aluminum is anodized and resistant to rust, unlike raw steel brackets.
How much weight can it hold?
It can support significant vertical loads (tens of kg), but the limiting factor is usually the M5 bolts securing it to your base, not the bracket itself.
Does it need lubrication?
No. The support itself is a static part. Only the bearings riding on the rod need lubrication.
Can I install the rod without removing the support?
Yes, if you loosen the top bolt completely, you can usually slide the rod in from the side or end.
Why is my rod loose inside the SK8?
Ensure you have tightened the top clamping bolt. If it's still loose, your rod might be undersized (e.g., 7.8mm instead of 8mm).
Probots™ Fix: You can add a single wrap of aluminum foil around the rod end to shim it tight.
Is this compatible with MGN linear rails?
No. MGN rails are square. SK8 is strictly for Round rods.
