Embrace the RISC-V Revolution. The ESP32-C3 CORE Board departs from older ESP8266 and ESP32 designs by utilizing a highly efficient, single-core 32-bit RISC-V processor running at up to 160 MHz. This architecture delivers an incredible balance of processing power and ultra-low power consumption, making it arguably the best direct replacement for aging ESP8266 projects.
Raw Power in a Tiny Footprint Unlike bulky dev boards, the CORE-ESP32 is designed to save maximum space. The top of the board houses the bare microcontroller IC, 4MB of SPI flash memory, and a highly efficient PCB trace antenna. It integrates a modern, durable USB Type-C port for programming and power, alongside two tactile buttons (BOOT and RST) for easy firmware flashing and manual resets.
Breadboard Friendly with Clear Pinouts The board is flanked by castellated edges and through-holes, allowing it to be either surface-mounted directly to a custom PCB or used with the included 15-pin male headers for standard breadboarding. To keep the top looking clean, the pinout diagram is extensively detailed on the bottom silkscreen, clearly identifying crucial GPIOs, multiple GND/3.3V power rails, and hardware UART pins (RX0/TX0).

What makes the ESP32-C3 different from a standard ESP32? The standard ESP32 uses a dual-core Xtensa processor, while the ESP32-C3 uses a newer, highly efficient single-core RISC-V processor. The C3 is designed as a direct, powerful upgrade to the older ESP8266.
Does this board support Bluetooth Classic? No, the ESP32-C3 architecture only supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE 5.0). It does not support older Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) audio streaming.
What is the operating voltage of the GPIO pins? The logic level is strictly 3.3V. Applying 5V directly to the GPIO pins (like IO04 or IO05) will destroy the microcontroller.
How do I power the board? You can power it via the USB Type-C port, or apply a regulated 5V to the +5V pin, or a regulated 3.3V directly to the 3.3V pin.
How much Flash memory does it have? This specific CORE board comes equipped with 4MB of SPI Flash memory for storing your firmware and file systems.
Do I need to solder the header pins? Yes, the board ships with two 15-pin male headers that you must solder yourself if you want to plug it into a breadboard.
Can I program this using the Arduino IDE? Absolutely! Simply install the ESP32 board manager package in Arduino IDE, select the ESP32-C3 Dev Module, and you are ready to code in C++.
Does it support MicroPython? Yes, the ESP32-C3 is fully supported by MicroPython, making it incredibly easy to program using Python scripts.
Where are the pin labels located? The top of the board is kept clean. All pin definitions (like IO02, IO10, RX0, TX0) are printed clearly in white silkscreen on the bottom of the PCB.
What are the BOOT and RST buttons for? "RST" performs a hardware reset. Holding "BOOT" while pressing "RST" forces the chip into download/flashing mode if your PC fails to upload code automatically.
Does the Type-C port have the proper resistors for USB-C to USB-C cables? Most minimalist ESP32-C3 core boards require a USB-A to USB-C cable for power and data. Some "smart" USB-C to USB-C laptop chargers may not supply power to it.
Where is the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna? The antenna is integrated directly into the top edge of the PCB as a copper trace (indicated by the Wi-Fi symbol logo).
Why is there no metal shield over the main chip? To save space and cost, this CORE board utilizes the bare ESP32-C3 IC rather than a pre-certified WROOM module.
What are the castellated edges for? The half-holes (castellations) on the sides allow you to solder this entire board completely flat onto another custom circuit board like a massive surface-mount component.
Does the ESP32-C3 have analog inputs (ADC)? Yes, it has two 12-bit SAR ADCs. Several GPIOs can be used to read analog voltages.
What is the maximum clock speed? The single-core RISC-V processor runs at a snappy 160 MHz.
Are there hardware UART pins? Yes, the board explicitly breaks out hardware serial pins labeled RX0 and TX0 on the bottom right side.
What does the EN pin do? The EN (Enable) pin is used to turn the 3.3V regulator on or off. Pulling it to Ground turns the ESP32-C3 off entirely.
Does it support 5GHz Wi-Fi networks? No. Like almost all current ESP microcontrollers, the ESP32-C3 only connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks.
Can I run FreeRTOS on this board? Yes, the native ESP-IDF framework uses FreeRTOS. Even though it is a single-core processor, FreeRTOS will seamlessly handle task scheduling and multi-threading for you.
