  • The Prerequisites (Past Projects): You are likely comfortable with Arduino or ESP32 and have hit a wall where your code runs too slowly because the processor can only do one thing at a time. You understand basic digital logic (AND/OR/NOT gates).
  • The Upgrade (What this unlocks): The Tang Primer 25K allows you to create true parallel circuits. Instead of writing a loop to check 10 sensors one by one, you can design a circuit that checks all 10 instantly and simultaneously. This unlocks capabilities like driving high-speed LED walls, processing video feeds without lag, or handling motor encoders at speeds no standard Arduino could touch.

Virtual Technician & Wiring Guide ⚠️

  • Voltage Warning: The GPIO pins on the Tang Primer 25K are 3.3V Logic. Do NOT connect 5V sensors or Arduino Uno outputs directly to this board, or you will damage the FPGA permanently. Use a logic level converter for 5V devices.
  • Power Requirements: The board is powered via the USB-C port. Ensure your USB port or adapter can supply at least 500mA, especially if you are drawing power from the PMOD headers for peripherals.
  • Driver Setup: The onboard debugger usually requires the WinUSB driver. We recommend using Zadig to install the WinUSB driver for the JTAG interface if your PC doesn't recognize it immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Does this board support the open-source Yosys/Nextpnr toolchain? Support for the GW5A series in Project Apicula (open source toolchain) is experimental and ongoing. We currently recommend the official Gowin EDA for stability.
  2. Do I need to buy a separate JTAG programmer?
    No, the Dock includes an onboard USB-JTAG debugger, so you can program it directly via the USB-C cable.
  3. Is the Gowin EDA software free to use?
    Yes, Gowin offers a free Educational/Standard license which supports this chip. You will need to register on their website to request a license file.
  4. Can I run Linux on this board?
    While it can run a soft-core RISC-V CPU, 23K LUTs is generally too small for a full graphical Linux desktop. It is better suited for RTOS (Real-Time Operating Systems) or bare-metal Linux (uClinux).
  5. What is the voltage logic of the PMOD pins?
    The PMOD pins operate at 3.3V LVCMOS levels.
  6. Can I connect a camera to this board?
    Yes, the 40-pin header allows for connecting specific DVP cameras, though you may need a breakout adapter depending on the camera module.
  7. Does it have built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?
    No, the Tang Primer 25K is a pure FPGA board. You would need to add a wireless module via the PMOD connectors.
  8. Is this board suitable for beginners learning FPGA?
    Yes, provided you are willing to learn Verilog/VHDL. The 25K size is generous enough that you won't run out of space quickly while learning.
  9. How do I power the board externally without USB?
    You can supply 5V to the 5V pin on the header, but ensure you have a regulated supply. USB-C is the safest method.
  10. Does it support HDMI output?
    It does not have an onboard HDMI port. You can generate video signals (DVI/HDMI) using the PMOD pins with a resistive DAC or a PMOD-to-HDMI adapter.
  11. What is the maximum clock speed?
    The internal fabric capability varies by design, but the PLLs can generate clocks up to several hundred MHz for internal logic.
  12. Are the pins 5V tolerant?
    No, the pins are strictly not 5V tolerant.
  13. Can I use this for Bitcoin mining?
    Technically yes, you can implement SHA-256 logic, but the hashrate would be negligible compared to ASICs or GPUs. It is for educational purposes only.
  14. How much SDRAM is on the board?
    The base board uses internal Block RAM. External SDRAM modules can be connected to the 40-pin header if needed.
  15. Does the board come pre-soldered?
    The Core board and Dock connectors are soldered. Extra pin headers for GPIOs usually come loose and need soldering if you plan to use them.
  16. Is there a Python library for this?
    FPGAs are not typically programmed in Python like a Raspberry Pi. However, you can use Amaranth (Python-based HDL) to generate the bitstream.
  17. Does it work on Mac OS?
    Gowin EDA has versions for Windows and Linux. Mac users generally need to use a Virtual Machine (Windows/Linux) to program the board.
  18. What is the difference between the Dock and the Core board?
    The Core board contains the FPGA chip and Flash. The Dock provides the USB port, PMOD connectors, and buttons for easy access.
  19. Can I use Arduino IDE to program this?
    No, FPGAs use Hardware Description Languages (Verilog/VHDL), not C++ sketches.
  20. What happens if I accidentally short a pin?
    FPGAs are very sensitive. Shorting an output pin to ground or power can permanently destroy that pin or the entire chip. Double-check wiring before powering up.
