Build a fully functional digital FM radio from scratch. Features the RDA5807 chip, 4-digit frequency display, clear acrylic housing, and dual power (USB/Battery)—the ultimate STEM soldering project.
Most DIY soldering kits end up in a drawer because they are just bare circuit boards with blinking lights. This HU-017A Digital FM Radio Kit is different. It’s not just a soldering exercise; it’s a mission to build a fully functional, aesthetically pleasing consumer appliance. Once you finish soldering the RDA5807 chip and the digital display, you encase it all in a sleek, transparent Acrylic Housing. The result? A retro-cool digital radio that looks good enough to sit on your office desk or bedside table.
Why buy this kit instead of the cheaper "red board" versions?
Probots™ Tech-Bridge: We don't just sell the bag of parts. We provide the English instruction manual (often missing in generic kits) to guide you through the assembly.
Probots™ Secure-Transit: Acrylic is fragile. We ship the laser-cut case pieces with their protective peel-off film intact and packed in rigid boxes to ensure they arrive without cracks or scratches.
Downloads:
Core Receiver: RDA5807 High-Sensitivity FM Chip.
Frequency Range: 87.0 MHz – 108.0 MHz (Global Standard).
Display: 4-Digit Red LED "Tube" Display (Shows Frequency).
Audio Output:
Built-in 0.5W 8Ω Speaker (Loud enough for a room).
3.5mm AUX Jack (For headphones or external amplifiers).
Power Supply (Dual Mode):
Mobile: 3.0V via 2x AA Battery Holder (Batteries not included).
Desktop: 5V via Micro-USB cable (Phone charger/Laptop).
Control Interface:
Buttons: Frequency Scan (VOL+/VOL-), Power ON/OFF.
Potentiometer: Fine Volume Adjustment.
Dimensions: ~107 x 70 x 23 mm (Assembled).
Weight: ~130g (without batteries).
STEM Education: The perfect "Final Exam" for a soldering workshop. It tests through-hole soldering, component recognition, and assembly.
Emergency Radio: Once built, it runs on standard AA batteries, making it a reliable backup receiver for news during power outages.
Retro Desk Accessory: A conversation starter that proves you know how electronics work.
Gift for Makers: A rewarding weekend project for anyone interested in electronics.
The Prerequisite: You should know how to tin a soldering iron tip and make a clean solder joint. If you've only twisted wires together before, practice on a perf-board first.
The Upgrade: This kit transitions you from "Passive Components" (Resistors/LEDs) to "Integrated Circuits". You will learn how to mount an IC socket, solder a digital display, and manage power distribution.
Effort Level: Intermediate.
Requirement: You need a Soldering Iron, Solder Wire, and Diagonal Cutters.
Critical Assembly Tips:
Component Height: Solder short components (Resistors) first, then taller ones (Capacitors, Switches). This keeps the board stable when you flip it over.
The IC Socket: Do NOT solder the chip directly. Solder the black IC socket first. Ensure the "notch" on the socket matches the "notch" on the PCB drawing. Insert the RDA5807 chip only after soldering is done.
Polarity Matters:
Electrolytic Capacitors: The white stripe on the can must go to the shaded part of the PCB circle.
LED Display: It only fits one way, but make sure it sits flush.
Acrylic Case: Peel off the brown/white paper protection from both sides of the acrylic before screwing it together.
⚠️ Power Warning: Do not put batteries in AND plug in USB at the same time. While some circuits handle this, it's safer to use one power source at a time to prevent battery heating.
Included in Kit:
Required (Sold Separately):
Tools: Soldering Iron, Solder Wire, Wire Cutters, Small Philips Screwdriver.
Power: 2x AA Batteries OR Micro-USB Cable.
Does this kit come pre-assembled? No, this is a DIY Kit. You must solder all the components yourself.
Is the soldering difficult? It is through-hole soldering (THT), which is standard for beginners. The components are well-spaced.
Does it include batteries? No, you need to buy 2x AA batteries separately.
Can I tune to a specific station manually? Yes, the buttons allow you to scan and step through frequencies (e.g., 93.5, 94.3).
Does it save the station when I turn it off? The RDA5807 chip usually resets to the default frequency when power is completely cut (batteries removed), but soft-off maintains settings if power remains.
Why is my reception poor? FM radio relies on the antenna. Ensure the wire antenna is fully extended and not coiled up inside the case.
Is the case glass or plastic? It is clear Acrylic (Plexiglass).
Can I use a 9V battery? No! The circuit is designed for 3V (Batteries) or 5V (USB). 9V will destroy the chip. Does it have Bluetooth? No, this is strictly an FM Radio receiver.
Why is the display showing "8888"? Check your solder joints on the display pins. A "cold joint" might be causing a connection error.
Can I use headphones? Yes, plugging in headphones usually mutes the main speaker automatically.
Do I need glue for the case? No, the case uses a "tab and slot" design held together by screws and nuts.
How long do batteries last? The LED display consumes some power, but a good pair of Alkaline AA batteries should last 10-20 hours of continuous play.
Is the instruction manual in English? Yes, we include a printed guide or a download link for English instructions.
What if I solder the IC backward? If you used the socket, just pry the chip out and flip it. If you soldered the chip directly... you might need a desoldering pump.
Is the speaker stereo or mono? The single built-in speaker is Mono. The headphone jack provides a Dual-Mono signal (sound in both ears).
Why does the acrylic look brown/scratched? That is the protective paper layer! Peel it off to reveal the crystal-clear plastic underneath.
Can I power it with a Power Bank? Yes, any standard USB power bank works via the Micro-USB port.
What is the "Potentiometer"? It's the dial that controls the volume. Solder it carefully to ensure it sits flat.
Is this safe for kids? It requires a hot soldering iron, so adult supervision is mandatory for children under 14.
