The rear of the PCB houses a sturdy, surface-mounted holder for a single 18650 Lithium-Ion battery. Instead of relying on fragile external battery connectors, your power source is locked directly onto the board. It features an advanced onboard charging IC that safely tops up the 18650 cell whenever a USB Type-C cable is connected. Crucially, it includes hardware reverse-polarity protection—if you accidentally insert the battery backwards, the board will protect the circuitry from catastrophic damage! A physical slide switch also allows you to completely cut power to the microcontroller without having to pry the battery out.
Massive Processing Overhead Driving this portable powerhouse is the highly capable Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 module. Operating at up to 240 MHz, this dual-core processor is equipped with vector instructions that accelerate neural network computing and signal processing. To ensure you have plenty of room for heavy firmware, data logging, or complex MicroPython scripts, LILYGO has packed this specific variant with a massive 16MB of Flash memory and 8MB of PSRAM.
Prototyping Made Simple Despite integrating a large battery holder, the board remains incredibly developer-friendly. It features a modern, reversible USB Type-C port for fast programming and power delivery. For attaching external peripherals, it includes standard 2.54mm pitch GPIO through-holes (male headers included). Additionally, it features a tiny STEMMA QT / Qwiic compatible JST-SH 4-pin port, allowing you to instantly daisy-chain I2C sensors (like temperature, humidity, or air quality monitors) without soldering a single wire.

1. What microcontroller drives this board? It is powered by the Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 dual-core microprocessor.
2. Does the board come with a battery? No. Due to strict shipping regulations regarding bare lithium cells, an 18650 battery is not included. You must purchase one separately.
3. What type of 18650 battery should I use? It is highly recommended to use an "unprotected flat-top" 18650 battery. Protected button-top cells are often slightly longer and may be extremely difficult to wedge into the plastic battery holder.
4. What happens if I insert the battery backwards? The T-Energy-S3 features built-in reverse polarity protection. If you insert the battery with the positive/negative ends flipped, the protection circuit engages to prevent the board from frying. However, you should always double-check the +/- markings on the holder before insertion.
5. How do I charge the battery? Simply leave the battery in the holder and plug a USB Type-C cable into the board. The onboard charging IC will safely charge the 18650 cell.
6. What does the slide switch do? The physical switch located near the USB port allows you to completely turn the battery power ON or OFF. This is excellent for resetting the board or saving battery life during transit without having to physically remove the 18650 cell.
7. How much Flash memory and RAM does it have? It features a massive 16MB of Flash memory and 8MB of PSRAM, making it highly capable of running complex MicroPython environments or buffering large arrays of sensor data.
8. How do I program this board? You connect it to your computer via the onboard USB Type-C port. It can be programmed using the Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, MicroPython, or the ESP-IDF framework.
9. What settings should I use in the Arduino IDE? Select the "ESP32S3 Dev Module". Ensure you set "USB CDC On Boot" to Enabled, Flash Size to 16MB, and PSRAM to "OPI PSRAM".
10. Does it support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth? Yes. The ESP32-S3 features native 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Bluetooth 5 (LE). Note that the S3 series does not support classic Bluetooth, only Low Energy (BLE).
11. Is there an easy way to connect I2C sensors? Yes. The board features a STEMMA QT / Qwiic compatible 4-PIN JST-SH connector, allowing you to plug in external I2C sensors effortlessly.
12. What do the buttons on the board do? There are two tactile buttons: a Reset (RST) button and a Boot button (IO0). The Boot button is used to manually enter flashing mode if the auto-reset circuit fails, and can also be programmed as a user input.
13. How do I manually enter bootloader mode? Hold down the "Boot" button, press and release the "Reset" button, and then release the "Boot" button. The board will now accept new firmware uploads via USB.
14. What are the exact dimensions of the board? The PCB measures 91.5mm in length, 32mm in width, and 20mm in height (accounting for the depth of the 18650 battery holder).
15. What logic voltage do the GPIO pins use? Like all ESP32 chips, the GPIO pins operate strictly on 3.3V logic. Supplying 5V directly to a logic pin will destroy the microcontroller.
16. How do I monitor the battery voltage in my code? The positive terminal of the battery is typically routed through a voltage divider to a specific ADC pin on the ESP32-S3 (refer to the official pinout diagram). You can read this analog pin to estimate the remaining battery percentage.
17. Do I need to solder the header pins? Yes. The board comes with two strips of male header pins unattached. You will need to solder them yourself if you wish to use the board on a breadboard or with Dupont jumper wires.
18. Does the board support external antennas? This specific version utilizes the onboard 3D PCB antenna integrated into the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 module. It does not have a u.FL connector for an external antenna.
19. Does it require a specific USB cable? You must ensure you are using a USB Type-C cable that supports both power AND data transfer. Cheap "charge-only" cables will only charge the battery and will not allow your computer to recognize the device for programming.
20. Can I use this for machine learning? Yes! The ESP32-S3 processor includes vector instructions designed to accelerate neural network computations, making this battery-powered board an excellent platform for deploying localized, remote TensorFlow Lite models.
