1. Is this kit fully assembled out of the box? No, this is a DIY kit. You will use the included screws, nuts, and standoffs to assemble the frame, mount the motors, and attach the wheels.

2. Why does my chassis look like brown cardboard instead of clear plastic? The acrylic is covered in a tight layer of protective brown adhesive paper to prevent scratching during shipping. Use your fingernail to peel it off the top and bottom faces before assembly to reveal the clear plastic!

3. What is the white wheel for? That is a caster wheel. Because there are only two drive wheels, the caster acts as the third point of contact to keep the robot from tipping over, while allowing it to glide smoothly in any direction.

4. Do I need a separate motor driver to run this? Yes. Microcontrollers like an Arduino cannot output enough current to drive DC motors directly. You will need a motor driver board, like an L298N or L293D, to power the motors safely.

5. Should I put the caster wheel in the front or the back? You can do either! Most makers put the drive wheels in the back and the caster in the front (rear-wheel drive) for better traction, but putting the drive wheels in the front (front-wheel drive) can sometimes make line-following robots turn more aggressively.

6. What voltage do the yellow motors require? The TT motors are designed to run safely on anywhere from 3V to 6V DC.

7. What does the included battery box hold? The battery box holds 4 standard AA batteries.

8. If the battery box holds 4x AA batteries, what is the total voltage? Standard alkaline AA batteries are 1.5V each, so the box provides 6.0V total. If you use rechargeable NiMH AAs (1.2V each), it will provide 4.8V total.

9. Can I use a LiPo battery instead of AAs? Yes, a 2S (7.4V) LiPo is a very popular upgrade! However, you will need to buy a separate LiPo battery strap or velcro to hold it down, and ensure your motor driver can handle the slightly higher voltage.

10. What is the little black switch for? It is a mini rocker switch. You can wire this in series with the red positive wire from your battery box so you can turn your robot on and off without having to rip the batteries out.

11. Where does the switch mount? There is a specifically sized rectangular cutout in the center of the acrylic chassis plate that the switch firmly snaps into.

12. What are the small black discs with the slots in them? Those are speed encoder discs. They mount to the inner shafts of the motors.

13. How do I use the encoder discs? You must purchase separate "photo-interrupter" sensor modules. The disc spins inside the sensor, and the slots break an invisible light beam, allowing your Arduino to count exactly how fast the wheel is turning.

14. Do I have to solder the wires to the motors? Yes. The kit includes a bundle of red and black wires. You will need a soldering iron to attach these wires to the delicate copper eyelets on the back of the yellow motors.

15. How do the motors mount to the acrylic? The kit includes small, T-shaped acrylic brackets and long machine screws. The motor sandwiches between the bracket and the main chassis plate.

16. Are the tires hard plastic or soft rubber? The yellow wheel hubs are hard plastic, but the black tires are made of a grippy, soft rubber for better traction.

17. What are the brass cylinders for? Those are threaded standoffs. They are used to mount the caster wheel at the correct height to keep the robot level, and can also be used to mount your sensor boards.

18. Can I use a Raspberry Pi instead of an Arduino? Absolutely. The mechanical platform doesn't care what brain you use. You can easily mount a Raspberry Pi to the deck using small screws or double-sided mounting tape.

19. Is this robot waterproof? No. The acrylic chassis is water-resistant, but the open DC motors, exposed wiring, and any electronics you add will short out if driven through puddles or wet grass.

20. Is 2WD better than 4WD? It depends on the application. 2WD is generally preferred for indoor use, mazes, and line following because it turns much smoother and uses less battery. 4WD is preferred for rough terrain, outdoor dirt, and carrying heavy payloads where extra grip is needed.
