Intelligent Cooling & Protection Heat is the enemy of diode longevity. To protect the internal components, this module is housed in a robust black aluminum chassis that acts as a giant heatsink. At the top, shielded by a clear acrylic plate, is an active, high-speed cooling fan that continuously drives cold air through the unit. At the bottom, the laser aperture is guarded by a red acrylic viewing shield. While you must still wear safety goggles, this shield helps block scattered, blinding light from bouncing across your room as the laser works.
Seamless PWM Integration This module doesn't just turn "on" and "off." It connects to your CNC control board via an included 3-Pin cable (12V, Ground, and PWM). The PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal allows your software (such as LightBurn or LaserGRBL) to dynamically adjust the laser's intensity from 0% to 100% in milliseconds. This is what allows you to engrave incredibly detailed, shaded grayscale photographs, rather than just solid, flat silhouettes.

What is the difference between the 20W and 5.5W ratings on the label? 20W is the electrical power the module draws from your power supply. 5.5W is the actual optical cutting power the laser beam delivers to your material.
What color is the laser beam? It emits an intense, visible blue light at a wavelength of exactly 450nm.
Is this a standalone laser engraver? No. This is a replacement or upgrade module. You must mount it to a host machine (like a 3018 CNC gantry) and connect it to a control board.
Will this plug directly into my 3018 Pro CNC? Yes. The rectangular aluminum body is designed to fit directly into standard 3018 CNC spindle clamps.
What do the three pins on the connector do? The included 3-pin cable provides 12V Power, Ground (GND), and the PWM signal from your control board to the laser.
Do I need to wear safety glasses if it has a red shield on the bottom? YES, ABSOLUTELY. The red acrylic shield reduces scattered ambient light, but it is NOT a substitute for proper safety glasses. You must wear goggles specifically rated to block 450nm light to prevent permanent eye damage.
What voltage does this module require? It is designed to run on a 12V DC power supply. Ensure your CNC control board can supply enough current (usually 3 to 5 Amps) to the laser port.
What is PWM? PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) allows your control board to rapidly pulse the laser. This simulates different brightness levels, allowing you to engrave shaded photographs instead of just solid black outlines.
Can this 5.5W optical laser cut metal? No. A 5.5W diode laser cannot cut through steel, copper, or aluminum.
Can it engrave bare metal? It will bounce off highly reflective, bare metals. However, it easily burns away top layers on painted metals, powder-coated tumblers, or anodized aluminum (like dog tags) to reveal the metal underneath.
Can it cut or engrave clear acrylic or glass? No. Because the laser is visible blue light (450nm), the beam will pass harmlessly straight through perfectly clear materials. You can only engrave or cut dark, opaque plastics.
What are the best materials to cut or engrave with this laser? It works phenomenally on plywood, balsa wood, solid hardwoods, genuine leather, slate, dark plastics, and cardboard.
How do I focus this laser? Turn the laser on at a very low power setting (e.g., 1% via software). Depending on the specific module design, you either twist the internal lens ring, or you adjust the Z-axis height of your CNC machine until the blue dot is a tiny, sharp pinprick on the material.
Why does the laser have a fan on top? Diode lasers generate extreme heat. The cooling fan runs constantly to push air down through the black aluminum heatsink, preventing the internal diode from overheating.
Can I use this as an upgrade for my 3D printer? Yes, if your 3D printer's mainboard has a 12V PWM-controllable fan port, you can often wire this laser to that port and use your printer's gantry as a laser engraver.
Should I run the laser at 100% power for all my jobs? While it can reach 100%, running any diode laser at maximum power for hours on end will shorten its lifespan. For long engraving jobs, operating at 80% to 85% power is recommended.
Will the laser burn my table? Yes. If the laser cuts completely through your material, it will immediately start burning your table. Always place a sacrificial "spoilboard" or a steel honeycomb mat underneath your work.
Can I leave the laser running unattended? No. Lasers work by burning material. There is always a risk of starting a fire, especially when cutting wood or cardboard. You must supervise the machine.
Why are my engraved lines thick and blurry? This almost always means the laser is out of focus. Ensure the distance between the laser lens and your material is perfectly set to the laser's focal length.
Why isn't the laser firing when my CNC machine is moving? Check your software settings. Make sure your software is sending the M3 or M4 (Laser ON) command, and ensure the S-value (Speed/Power) is set above zero. Also, verify the 3-pin cable is seated correctly.
