The Science of a Perfect IDC Crimp IDC stands for "Insulation-Displacement Connector." These connectors feature a row of microscopic, razor-sharp metal forks. When you insert a flat ribbon cable into the connector and squeeze it shut, those forks slice cleanly through the grey PVC insulation and physically bite into the copper wire inside, making a perfect electrical connection without requiring you to strip any wires. However, if the pressure isn't perfectly flat and parallel, the plastic connector will shatter, or the forks will miss the copper. How do I use this tool? Slide the ribbon cable into your plastic IDC connector, place the connector assembly onto the yellow die in the jaws of the tool, and firmly squeeze the red handles together until the connector clicks shut.
What is the yellow plastic piece for? It is a replaceable alignment die. It holds the connector perfectly straight and flat so it doesn't slip out of the jaws while you are applying heavy pressure.
Can I use the tool without the yellow die attached? Yes, the die slides off completely. However, using it is highly recommended to prevent crushing connectors unevenly.
