3D Printer 20x4 2004 Smart LCD Display Controller for RAMPS 1.4 βΉ749.00 CNC Aluminum Architecture Plastic extruder housings can warp, crack, or melt when enclosed in a high-temperature printing chamber. The HGX-LITE completely eliminates this point of failure. The entire main shell is precision-machined from a solid aluminum profile. This aerospace-grade construction provides a perfectly rigid foundation for the gear train and acts as a massive thermal heat sink, pulling heat away from the pancake stepper motor to prevent the filament from softening prematurely.
Oversized, Ultra-Hard Dual-Drive Gears A direct drive setup is only as good as its grip. The HGX-LITE is engineered with oversized, densely-toothed drive wheels that maximize the contact surface area with the filament. These aren't cheap brass gears; they are manufactured from hardened steel and coated in nickel, achieving an incredible hardness rating of HRC 60+ (HV3300). Whether you are printing highly abrasive Carbon Fiber Nylon, slippery PETG, or ultra-soft TPU, these gears bite aggressively and refuse to wear down.
Lightweight Planetary Efficiency To push filament reliably without making the toolhead too heavy, the HGX-LITE utilizes a high-ratio reduction gear system (featuring wear-resistant internal nylon step-down gears for noise reduction). This allows the use of a tiny, custom round pancake stepper motor. The mechanical advantage of the gear train multiplies the tiny motor's torque, delivering massive pushing force while keeping the overall center of gravity incredibly close to the X-axis rail, severely reducing "ghosting" artifacts during rapid direction changes.
Specifications
Extrusion Type: Direct Drive (Dual Gear)
Body Material: CNC Aluminum Alloy (Silver)
Filament Gear Material: Hardened Steel (Nickel Plated, HRC 60+ / HV3300)
Supported Filament: 1.75mm
Motor Type: High-Torque Round Pancake Stepper
Tensioning: Adjustable manual thumbwheel
Dimensions: ~59.2mm (W) x 43.7mm (H) x 51mm (D with motor)
Key Applications and Projects
High-Temp Enclosures: Building a sealed ABS/ASA printer where standard PETG/ABS extruder housings would warp from chamber heat.
Abrasive Filament Printing: Pushing highly abrasive Glow-in-the-Dark, Carbon Fiber, or Wood-filled filaments that would quickly shred standard brass drive gears.
Ender 3 / CR-10 Direct Drive Conversions: Ditching the long, stringing-prone Bowden tube for a responsive direct drive setup without crippling your print speeds.
Unlock New Capabilities (Project Evolution) The Ultimate Flexible Filament Factory: Standard extruders leave small gaps between the drive gears and the hotend throat, causing soft filaments like TPU or NinjaFlex to buckle and jam (the "spaghetti" effect). The HGX-LITE's constrained filament path prevents this. Evolve your printer! Mount this extruder directly above an all-metal hotend using a custom-printed carriage. Tighten the side tensioner to lightly grip the TPU, and you can now confidently print flexible phone cases, RC drone tires, and custom gaskets at speeds you previously thought were impossible!
1x HGX-LITE CNC Aluminum Extruder Body (Silver)
1x Round Pancake Stepper Motor
1x Stepper Motor Extension Cable (4-pin)
1x Tensioning Screw and Heavy-Duty Spring
2x Allen/Hex Keys for assembly/maintenance
1x Assorted Mounting Hardware Kit (M3 screws)

Q: Will this bolt directly onto my Ender 3 or Voron? A: No, it does not mount directly to factory metal plates out of the box. You will need to 3D print a specific mounting bracket/carriage adapter for your exact printer model. Many community-designed mounts for the HGX-LITE are available on sites like Printables or Thingiverse.
Q: Is the outer shell made of metal or painted plastic? A: The main outer shell is genuinely CNC-machined from solid aluminum, making it exceptionally durable and highly resistant to ambient heat.
Q: Do I need to adjust my E-steps (steps/mm)? A: Yes. Because this extruder utilizes a reduction gear system, your E-steps will need to be significantly increased in your firmware (Marlin, Klipper, etc.). You must perform a standard 100mm extrusion calibration test to find the exact value for your machine.
Q: Can it print 2.85mm filament? A: No, the filament path and drive gears are designed exclusively for standard 1.75mm 3D printer filament.
Q: What is the purpose of the internal nylon gears? A: While the main dual-drive gears that touch the filament are ultra-hardened steel, some internal step-down/reduction gears are made from high-strength nylon. This is an intentional design choice to drastically reduce the mechanical grinding noise of the gear train while maintaining high wear resistance.
Q: How do I load filament? A: Press down on the large side lever to open the dual-drive gears, push your 1.75mm filament through the top PTFE guide until it enters your hotend, and release the lever to clamp down.
Q: What does the thumbwheel do? A: The thumbwheel dictates the pressure of the internal spring. This controls how aggressively the hardened steel gears bite into your filament.
Q: How tight should I make the tensioning thumbwheel? A: You want it tight enough that the filament cannot be easily pulled out by hand, but not so tight that the gears deeply crush or deform the filament. Soft filaments like TPU require much less tension than hard filaments like PLA or ABS.
Q: Does it include a hotend? A: No. This is strictly the cold-end extruder assembly and stepper motor. You will pair it with your existing hotend (like an E3D V6, Dragonfly, or standard Creality hotend).
Q: Is the stepper motor capable of handling high temperatures? A: Yes, the included round pancake stepper motor is a high-temperature class motor, designed to operate safely inside heated printer enclosures. Additionally, the aluminum frame of the extruder acts as a heat sink for the motor.
