The fastest way to terminate DB9 cables. This solderless breakout adapter features a DB9 Male connector and 9 screw terminals housed in a protective plastic shell. Ideal for RS232/RS485 field wiring and prototyping.
Terminate Serial cables in seconds—no soldering iron required. The DB9 Male to Screw Terminal Breakout is a lifesaver for field engineers and prototypers. Instead of fiddling with solder cups and tiny wires, you can simply strip your wire, insert it into the robust screw terminal block, and tighten it down. This "Solderless" design is perfect for custom RS232, RS485, and CAN-Bus wiring on the go.
Complete with Protective Case. Unlike bare breakout boards that can short out against metal surfaces, this module comes with a durable Snap-On Plastic Case. The housing protects your connections from dust and accidental shorts, while the included cable clamp (strain relief) prevents the wires from being pulled out of the terminals.
Specifications
Connector Type: DB9 Male (9-Pin D-Sub Plug).
Termination: 9 x Screw Terminals (Pitch 3.81mm).
Wire Range: 26AWG to 16AWG.
Housing Material: ABS Plastic (Black).
Dimensions: Approx 50mm x 34mm x 21mm.
Current Rating: 1A per pin.
Key Applications & Projects
Field Repairs: Quickly replace a broken DB9 connector on a machine without bringing a soldering station.
Custom Pinouts: Easily experiment with different Tx/Rx/Gnd configurations by swapping wires in the terminals.
Diagnostic Tools: Create custom loopback plugs or tap into serial lines for monitoring.
Virtual Technician: Wiring & Safety ⚠️
Pin Mapping: The screw terminals are numbered 1 through 9, corresponding directly to the standard DB9 pin numbers.
Strain Relief: Crucial Step: After wiring, ensure you tighten the plastic cable clamp at the tail of the case. This prevents the wires from ripping out of the screw terminals if the cable is tugged.
Screwdriver: You will need a small flathead or Phillips precision screwdriver (2.0mm or 2.5mm) for the terminals.
Accessories
Included in the Package:
1 x DB9 Male Breakout Board
1 x Plastic Case (Top & Bottom Shell)
1 x Cable Clamp Kit (2 Screws + Plastic Bar)
2 x Long Jack Screws (to lock the connector to the port)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is this the Male or Female connector? This is the Male version (pins). It plugs into a Female socket. If you need the one with holes (Female), search for "DB9 Female Breakout".
Does it require soldering? No. The main feature is the Screw Terminal Block, allowing you to connect wires using just a small screwdriver.
Are the pins numbered? Yes, the PCB inside has clear labels (1 through 9) printed next to each screw terminal, matching the standard DB9 pinout.
What wire size fits? It accepts wire gauges from 26AWG to 16AWG. Standard Ethernet or hook-up wire fits perfectly.
Does the case snap shut or use screws? The case typically snaps together, but better versions (like ours) may include screws or a very tight snap fit. It can be reopened if you need to change wiring.
Is the case shielded? No, the included case is Plastic (ABS). It does not provide EMI shielding. If you are in a very noisy industrial environment, you might need a metal housing (sold separately).
Does it connect the Metal Shell (Ground)? Most of these breakout boards have a specific terminal labelled "GND" or connected to the shell, but often the 9 terminals correspond strictly to Pins 1-9. The metal shell is usually connected to the mounting screws.
Will this fit a VGA port? No. VGA uses a "High Density" DB15 connector (3 rows of pins). This is a standard DB9 (2 rows of pins). They are not compatible.
Can I use it for RS485? Yes. RS485 only uses 2 or 3 wires (Data+, Data-, GND). You can easily wire those to the specific pins your device requires.
Can I use it for CAN Bus? Yes. DB9 is the standard connector for CAN Bus (OBDII adapters often convert to this). Pin 2 is usually CAN_L, and Pin 7 is CAN_H.
Are the long thumbscrews included? Yes, the kit includes two long metal screws to lock the connector into the mating port.
What size screwdriver do I need? A 2.0mm or 2.5mm flathead screwdriver is ideal. The screws are small.
Is there strain relief for the cable? Yes, the case has a plastic clamp at the back with two screws to grip the cable jacket and prevent pulling on the terminals.
Can I use multiple wires in one terminal? The terminals are small. You can twist two thin wires (e.g., 24AWG) together, but fitting two thick wires is difficult.
What is the current rating? It is rated for signal currents, typically 1 Amp per pin maximum. Do not use for high-power transmission.
What is the voltage rating? Rated for standard RS232 levels (+/- 12V to 24V). The insulation can handle up to 60V DC safely.
Is it waterproof? No, the case is not sealed. It protects against dust and touch, but liquids can enter.
Can I use this for audio? Technically, yes, if you are building a custom snake, but DB9 is not a standard audio impedance-matched connector.
What is the terminal pitch? The screw terminals are spaced at 3.81mm or 3.96mm pitch.
Is the PCB removable? Yes, the PCB sits inside the case. You can remove it if you want to mount it panel-style without the shell (though it has no mounting holes itself).
Does it work with solid core wire? Yes, solid core wire clamps down very well in these terminals.
Why is my connection loose? Make sure you have stripped enough insulation (about 5mm) and that the screw is clamping on the copper, not the plastic insulation of the wire.
