ACEBOTT Smart Car Starter Educational DIY Kit ESP32 Wifi-App Control QD001 ₹7,999.00 The Solenoid Valve 12V DC 0.5 inch is the standard actuator for building smart water systems. Unlike the high-voltage 220V versions, this 12V DC model is designed specifically for the safety and versatility required in hobbyist robotics and IoT projects. Whether you are building an automated plant watering system, a smart pet feeder, or a touchless faucet, this Normally Closed (NC) valve gives you precise electronic control over water flow using safer low voltages.
Probots™ Logic-Safe : Inductive loads like solenoids generate voltage spikes (back EMF) when switched off. We recommend this valve because its coil characteristics are tested to work reliably with standard flyback diodes, protecting your sensitive microcontrollers from resets or damage.
Probots™ QC-Pass : We verify the solenoid actuation force to ensure it opens crisply even near its minimum pressure rating, reducing the common "stuck valve" frustration found in cheaper bulk imports.a
Operating Voltage: 12V DC
Current Consumption: ~400mA to 600mA (at 12V)
Valve Type: Normally Closed (NC) - Water stops when power is cut.
Port Size: 1/2 inch (0.5") External Thread (Standard G1/2)
Working Pressure: 0.02 Mpa – 0.8 Mpa (Requires pressure to open; NOT for zero-pressure gravity feed).
Flow Character: Unidirectional
Response Time: < 0.15 sec (Open), < 0.3 sec (Close)
Fluid Medium: Water / Low-viscosity non-corrosive fluids (0-60°C)
Filter: Integrated stainless steel mesh on the inlet.
Smart Garden Irrigation: Interface with an ESP8266 and a soil moisture sensor to water plants only when dry.
Touchless Faucets: Use an IR proximity sensor to trigger the valve for hygiene-focused projects.
Pet Water Dispensers: Create a scheduled fresh water refill system for dogs or cats.
Hydroponics Management: Control nutrient solution flow in automated growing setups.
Prerequisite: You've likely blinked an LED or spun a small motor with an Arduino.
The Upgrade: This valve introduces you to Fluid Control. You aren't just moving electrons anymore; you are moving physical matter (water).
Effort Level: Intermediate. Requires understanding of transistor/relay drivers and external power supplies (12V is higher than the Arduino's 5V).
Driver Required: This valve draws ~500mA, which will destroy an Arduino/ESP32 GPIO pin instantly.
Use a TIP120 Transistor, IRF540 MOSFET, or a 5V Relay Module.
Flyback Diode: If using a transistor/MOSFET, you MUST connect a diode (1N4007) across the valve terminals (Cathode to +12V, Anode to Drain/Collector) to absorb voltage spikes.
Power Supply: Do not power this from the Arduino's "Vin" or "5V" pin. Use a separate 12V 1A+ Power Adapter. Share the Ground (GND) between the 12V source and the Arduino.
Required (Sold Separately):
1-Channel Relay Module (5V or 12V)
1/2" Female Threaded Pipe Connectors
Teflon Tape (for leak-proof sealing)
Waterproof Junction Box
Can I power this directly from an Arduino pin?
NO. The 500mA draw will burn out the Arduino pin (rated for 20mA). You need a driver (Relay/Transistor).
Will water flow if I just pour it in (Gravity Feed)?
No. This is a pilot-assisted valve. It needs a minimum pressure (~3 PSI or mains pressure) to lift the diaphragm. It will trickle or leak at zero pressure.
Does polarity matter for the two pins?
No, the solenoid coil is non-polarized. You can connect +12V and GND to either terminal.
Can I use a 9V battery?
A standard 9V battery has very low capacity. It might open the valve a few times but will die quickly. Use a 12V adapter or 3S LiPo.
Is it waterproof?
The mechanical body handles water, but the electrical tabs are exposed. Do not submerge the valve or let rain short the contacts.
Can I control the flow rate (PWM)?
No. Solenoid valves are designed for ON/OFF. Rapid PWM will just cause the valve to chatter and overheat.
What happens if I run it at 24V?
It will open very fast but overheat rapidly and likely burn the coil within minutes.
Can I keep it ON for 24 hours?
Not recommended. The coil will get very hot. For long-duration "ON" states, consider a Motorized Ball Valve instead.
Why is it leaking?
Check flow direction. The arrow on the bottom must point towards the outlet. Backward installation causes leaks.
Can I use this for drinking water?
It is industrial plastic. For potable water, look for "Food Grade" certified valves.
Does it work with air/gas?
It acts as a valve, but the seals are designed for water viscosity. Air might leak slowly.
Probots™ Tech-Bridge ????????: We recommend specific pneumatic valves for air projects to ensure airtight seals.
What thread size do I need for pipes?
Standard 1/2" BSP or NPT plumbing fittings found in hardware stores will fit.
Why does it hum/buzz?
A slight hum is normal for solenoids. If it's loud, check if the input voltage is sagging below 10V.
Can I use a 12V Lead-Acid battery?
Yes, lead-acid batteries are excellent power sources for these valves.
How hot does it get?
Up to 50-60°C after continuous operation is normal.
Is there a manual override switch?
No, it can only be opened electrically.
Can I use this for oil?
Only if the oil is low viscosity (like water). Thick oil will clog the pilot hole.
Do I need a check valve before it?
The valve blocks backflow when closed, but a dedicated check valve is safer if back-pressure is high.
What size tubing fits directly?
None. You need a "1/2 inch Female to X mm Barb" adapter to connect flexible tubing.
Is the filter cleanable?
Yes, the metal mesh on the inlet pulls out for cleaning.
