Linear Ball Bearing Slide Unit CNC 3D Printer SC12UU 12 mm βΉ699.00 The "Extended Length" Advantage When building machines that utilize heavy spindles or carry significant weight, standard-length linear bearings can struggle. A heavy carriage can easily shift, causing short bearings to "rack" or twist, which leads to binding and scraping. The LM12LUU entirely mitigates this issue by extending its outer steel shell to a massive 57mm in length. This drastically increases the wheelbase on the shaft, preventing twisting, eliminating play, and allowing you to support incredibly heavy loads smoothly with just a single bearing per rod.
12mm Precision & Recirculating Balls Moving up to 12mm smooth rods provides a monumental leap in mechanical rigidity over standard 8mm or 10mm systems, preventing the rods from bowing under the weight of a heavy Z-axis. Inside the 12mm bore of this bearing, multiple circuits of tiny hardened steel balls carry the load. As the bearing pushes forward, the internal polymer cage recirculates the balls in an endless loop, providing infinite travel distance with incredibly low friction.
Dual Seals & Retaining Grooves Because these are heavily utilized in messy workshops, protecting the internal ball tracks is vital. The "UU" designation means it is equipped with double rubber wiper seals at both ends of the cylinder. These gently hug the 12mm rod, wiping away sawdust, metal shavings, and debris before they can enter the bearing. The outer 21mm metal shell also features two machined grooves, allowing you to quickly lock the bearing into a tubular mount using standard external snap rings (circlips).

Heavy-Duty CNC Routers: Upgrading the Y-axis and Z-axis of large desktop CNC machines to handle the intense vibrations of cutting hardwoods or milling aluminum.
DIY Plasma Cutters: Providing the rigid, heat-distant guidance required for a wide plasma torch gantry spanning across a metal cutting table.
Automated Sliding Racks: Creating custom, motorized pull-out server racks or heavy-duty storage drawers in a workshop.
Unlock New Capabilities (Project Evolution)
The Automated Camera Crane (Jib): Standard camera sliders are great for ground-level timelapses, but cinematic sweeping shots require a crane. Evolve your cinematography by building a motorized camera jib! Because a crane arm acts as a massive lever, it puts immense twisting force on its base. By utilizing heavy 12mm steel rods and these 57mm LM12LUU extended bearings for your sliding counterweight system, you guarantee the mechanism won't bind or flex, giving you buttery-smooth, professional-grade panning shots!
Package Includes:
1 x LM12LUU Extended Linear Bearing (12x21x57mm)

What does "LM12LUU" stand for? "LM" stands for Linear Motion. "12" indicates the 12mm inner bore. "L" signifies it is the "Long" extended version. "UU" means it has double rubber end seals.
What are the exact dimensions? It has a 12mm inner diameter, 21mm outer diameter, and is 57mm long.
What kind of rod do I need for this? You must strictly use a 12mm precision smooth rod made of hardened steel or chrome-plated steel.
Can I use these on aluminum or carbon fiber rods? No. The hardened steel balls inside the bearing will quickly dig trenches into softer materials like aluminum or carbon fiber, destroying both the shaft and the bearing.
Do these need to be lubricated? Yes! Out of the box, they are coated in a thin anti-rust shipping oil. Before putting them into service, you must pack them with a light machine oil or white lithium grease.
What is the difference between LM12UU and LM12LUU? The standard LM12UU is much shorter (typically 30mm long). The LM12LUU is extended (57mm long), acting essentially like two standard bearings within one shell for far superior stability.
Are these bearings directional? No. They are perfectly symmetrical and can be slid onto your 12mm rod from either direction.
What are the two grooves on the outside of the metal shell? Those are retaining ring grooves. They allow you to securely lock the bearing inside a custom tubular housing using standard metal snap rings (circlips).
Can this bearing handle rotational movement? NO. This is strictly a linear bearing. Spinning the shaft rapidly inside the bearing (like an axle) will derail the balls and destroy the polymer cage.
Are they waterproof? No. While the rubber seals help keep dust out, the high-carbon steel shell and internal balls will rust if exposed to water or high humidity without heavy grease protection.
Why do they sound "scratchy" out of the box? A "scratchy" sound usually means there is microscopic manufacturing dust inside, or they lack proper lubrication. Soaking them in Isopropyl Alcohol, letting them dry, and repacking them with lithium grease will easily silence them.
Will the balls fall out if I take the bearing off the rod? No, the black internal polymer cage physically retains the steel balls inside the bearing. You can slide them on and off shafts freely.
How do I properly press this into an aluminum block? If press-fitting it into an SC12LUU block or custom mount, apply pressure only to the outer steel rim. Pressing on the inner polymer cage or rubber seal will instantly destroy the bearing.
How much weight can a single LM12LUU handle? Due to its length and large balls, it has a dynamic load rating of approximately 813 Newtons (about 83 kg / 182 lbs). However, always use them in parallel pairs or sets to prevent twisting moments.
What does the black rubber ring on the ends do? It acts as a physical wiper. As the bearing moves, it wipes dust and debris off the steel rod so it doesn't get ground into the delicate internal ball tracks.
How many ball circuits does this bearing have? Standard 12mm linear bearings typically feature four or five distinct recirculating ball tracks spaced evenly around the inside of the polymer cage.
Can I use these to upgrade my standard desktop 3D printer? Not directly. Standard desktop 3D printers use 8mm rods. You would have to replace your smooth rods with 12mm versions and redesign all your printed carriage blocks to accommodate the massive 21mm outer diameter.
Can these handle side-loads (twisting forces)? Linear bearings are designed for direct radial loads. Twisting forces (moments) will cause them to bind. While the "Long" 57mm version resists twisting vastly better than short ones, you should still use guide rails in parallel pairs.
Do they require a break-in period? Yes. Once properly greased and mounted, running the carriage back and forth by hand a few dozen times will distribute the grease and help seat the balls into their tracks, noticeably improving smoothness.
Can I 3D print a mount for this? Yes! 3D printing a custom carriage block with a 21mm diameter channel and securing the bearing with heavy-duty zip-ties or snap rings is a highly effective DIY mounting method.
